Being a Homo sapiens from the Anthropocene epoch, I am interested in understanding evolutionary forces driving microbial evolution and adaptation in extreme conditions resulting from anthropic activity. Microbes are wonderful life forms living in complex communities that play key roles in biogeochemical cycles by offering functional “services” in every living ecosystem. Closely related or phylogenetically distant, microbes exchange genetic material via recombination and lateral gene transfer or other unknown mechanisms not yet discovered. The way those evolutionary forces shape microbial communities and their ecosystemic services in contemporary environmental changes has yet to be fully understood. In Derome Laboratory, I am working on projects combining the applications of evolutionary concepts to ecotoxicology.
