The complex and dynamic interaction between the microbiota and its host involve many aspects. The aim of my project is to understand the impact of heavy metal such as cadmium on the functional interaction between the gut microbiota and epithelial cells in yellow perch.

Ongoing projects

Microevolution of host-microbiota interactions in the context of Cadmium contamination in the yellow perch (Perca flavescens).
Prof N. Derome (as part of project Microbiota : host-microbiota adaptive functional interactions facing ecological constraints, NSERC, Discovery grant, 2014-2019).

In order to predict the impact of heavy metals on living organisms, it is essential to understand the mechanisms by which these metals accumulate in the biomass. More precisely, the contribution of the host microbiota in xenobiotics resilience needs further investigation. In this context, juvenile yellow perch (Perca flavescens) were targeted to study to explore the host-microbiota relationship under a context of recent adaptive evolution due to chronic exposure to cadmium.
