Ongoing project "Modeling host-microbiota interactions at the health/disease interface in the honeybee"
My research project is currently based on the determination and understanding of the potential benefits that could generate an artificial change in honey bee microbiota. It is well known that gut microbiota plays many rôles particularly in the level of growth, nutrition, immune system activation and physiology homeostasis. These benefits could be particularly interesting in the case of contamination by pesticides, antibiotiques or by other infectious agents such as Nosema ceranae.
I’m particularly interested in tracking the impact generated by these stressors in the honey bee microbiota homeostasis, their collective and their individual immune systems. I really believe that good probiotic supplementation could improve the strength and resiliency of the honey bee colonies against these stressors and their synergetic effects.
Improving the health of honey bee colonies by the use of probiotics is the main goal of my PhD project. Fundamentally, this should allow a better understanding of the bees chemical or biological contaminations and of host-microbiota interactions.
